Net Closes on Divorce Business
- Cheaper legal fees the key

INTERNET legal services have scored a victory over traditional alternatives by storming into the market for quickie divorces.

In just 10 weeks, the web has managed to carve out 6% of the business in uncontested divorces in England and Wales, largely because of the massive cost savings available. Online service Desktop Lawyer charges UKP59 for its divorce pack, which includes a petition form, affidavit and letter to a district judge. A similar service from high street lawyers in London would work out at around UKP500.

"Undefended divorce is largely a mechanical process of form-filling," said Desktop Lawyer's Richard Cohen. "Divorcing couples don't want to have to pay a solicitor for re-inventing the wheel."
