| Olympic Boost for Crossrail
- Transport could be galvanised by the games CROSSRAIL looks more likely to be built now that London's bid for the 2012 Olympics has become official. A government document has indicated that the games would suffer severe transport problems without Crossrail, the long-planned scheme which would link Heathrow airport in the west with Stratford and the new Channel tunnel rail terminal in the east. Crossrail has been the dream of transport planners for well over a decade but its multi-billion pound price tag has proved a block for successive governments. The prospect of staging the Olympics could also play into the hands of London's airports, whose owners are lobbying the government for extra runways at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted. |
