Dance of Death Departs
- Strindberg drama rests in peace

DANCE OF DEATH closes at the Lyric Theatre June 7. Ian McKellen, Frances de la Tour and Owen Teale make way for Terry Johnson's Royal Court transfer, Hitchcock Blonde.

Sean Mathias' revival of the Strindberg drama stars McKellen in a role he last enjoyed on Broadway when the show opened just days after the 11 September terrorist attacks. Mathias directed Helen Mirren in Strindberg's tale of ageing love under attack, before recasting the classic for its London outing.

The show's closure accomodates McKellen's film commitments as he adds another credit to his roles in The Lord of the Rings trilogy and in X-Men. Mean time his fellow actors will be consolidating their stage careers. De La Tour has performed in The Cherry Orchard at the National and in Anthony and Cleopatra at the Royal Shakespeare Company, whilst Teale won a Tony for acting in the West End hit A Doll's House.
