Showtime for Ragtime
- New musical opens tonight

RAGTIME opens tonight at the Piccadilly theatre. The Tony award-winning musical runs until June 11, following a successful two year run on Broadway.

The show is based on EL Doctorow's 1975 novel and the 1981 film starring James Cagney. The story follows three American families caught up in current affairs and the new craze for ragtime tunes at the turn of the 20th century. Maria Friedman stars, building on her experience in West End shows such as The Witches Of Eastwick and Chicago.

In fact the musical Chicago is Ragtime's biggest rival. Now in its sixth year, Fred Ebb's tale of love and deception amongst American chorus lines charts the plight of a feisty determined to get herself acquitted of murder. Ann Reinking's choreography in the style of Bob Fosse looks set to keep Ragtime on its toes.
