|Congestion Charge to Go West and East
- More London road tolls could come in next year
THE CONGESTION Charge is likely to be expanded both east and west from its current central London zone.
London Mayor Ken Livingstone plans to start charging drivers who travel into areas such as Kensington and Chelsea and Tower Hamlets from as early as next year, possibly at a lower rate than the UKP5 being levied on motorists who drive into central London at the moment.
There are a few hurdles Livingstone needs to clear before all this. First, the Mayor is banking on the national government introducing new satellite technology that would make the scheme more cost-effective. Second, Livingstone faces re-election in June. The main challenger for the Mayor's job is Conservative candidate Steve Norris who has taken an anti-Congestion Charge line.
