Abigail's Party Over
- Mike Leigh's anniversary play closes

ABIGAIL'S PARTY by Mike Leigh has posted closing notices at the West End's Whitehall Theatre for July 12. The 25th anniversary revival of the play transferred from the New Ambassadors but ends six weeks earlier than the anticipated booking period.

The production was launched last Summer by the Hampstead theatre where the play originally premiered. Leigh's satire on the pretensions of the nouveau riche was a cult hit upon opening in 1977, and was filmed as a BBC Play for Today. Last year the relaunch marked the Hampstead theatre's departure from its temporary building to a newly refurbished home.

Leigh's ex-wife Alison Steadman continues to star as the naff hostess Beverly. Her character's classless humour is matched only by the trashy fun of the musical replacing her. Once Abigail's Party is over, the sing-a-long Abba karaoke concert show can be seen back at the Whitehall Theatre.
