|Lampposts Speak Language of the Blind|
- New technology scheme for Golders Green
LAMPPOSTS in north London are to be given a voice so that they can help guide blind people.
Blind and partially sighted people kitted out with smart cards will hear messages from the lampposts as they approach, telling them where they are.
"With the help of these talking signs, blind and partially-sighted people will now know exactly where they are in the crowded streets, Tube and bus station of Golders Green," said Mark Rose, a consultant involved with the scheme.
So far, 26 lampposts have been equipped with the message boxes in Golders Green. If deemed a success, it is expected the scheme will be extended to other areas of London.
