|Police Storm Finsbury Park Mosque
- 100 officers involved; seven terrorist suspects arrested
FINSBURY PARK Mosque, one of London's biggest, was raided by police last night as part of an anti-terrorist operation.
At 2.00am, a 100-strong squad of armed and armoured officers stormed the 2,000 capacity mosque in north London and arrested seven as yet unnamed suspects. Dozens of police have remained to conduct a thorough search of the building.
The raid follows on from the arrest last week, also in north London, of suspects in the ricin poison case. "This is linked to arrests made in north London, but at this stage there is nothing to suggest chemical substances are on the premises," a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said.
Home Secretary David Blunkett gave the raid his backing. "We must take firm action to deal with any potential threat to public safety without fear or favour," Blunkett said.
Finsbury Park Mosque has gained a reputation for being a home-from-home for Islamic militants exiled from other countries.
