Olympic Bid Backed by London MPs
- But government worried about cost of failure

A LONDON Olympic bid is backed by a huge majority of London MPs, according to a new survey.

Some 80 per cent of members across the capital and across the political spectrum support the idea of the government spending millions of pounds to put up a bid for London to host the 2012 games.

"The Olympics will make London an even more high-profile tourist destination," said Tory leader and MP for Chingford Iain Duncan Smith. Chris Smith, the MP for Islington South and Finsbury Park and a former Labour Culture Minister, said: "It's a great opportunity for London to host such an event."

However, the chances are that the government will not take up the challenge of making a bid, fearing failure would besmirch their image. "The experience of Wembley Stadium and the Millennium Dome has taught us these things can spiral out of control. We have to approach things carefully," said one government source.
