Congestion Charging is Born
- Dawn of a new era for London motorists

CONGESTION charging is born today with London motorists now able to pay up front for the privilege of driving into the centre of their own city.

The scheme proper doesn't start until February 17 when only those who have paid will be eligible to drive into town, but local government officials hope as many people as possible arrange payment beforehand to prevent a log-jam.

"This is the most important milestone so far for congestion charging," said a spokesperson for Transport for London. "It is when years of hard work begin to pay off and we can see the system working as intended."

Two-hundred shops have been authorised to accept payments, and motorists can also pay by via text on mobile phones or on the internet. Details of the latter method are on 0845 900 1234 or www.cclondon.com.

Meanwhile, opposition to congestion charging continues as it emerged an alliance of unions representing low-paid and government workers was to launch a legal challenge in a bid to get the whole scheme scrapped.
