UK Plays War Games with Iraq
- Reservists called-up as chances of conflict are said to decline

THE BRITISH government sent out mixed messages today on the issue of impending war with Iraq.

On the one hand, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw rated the chances of war at 60-40 against, while on the other, defence chiefs ordered the call-up of 7,000 army, navy and air force reservists.

Straw's assessment contrasts with one he made before Christmas when he fixed the odds at 60-40 in favour of war. Stand by for more sudden switches in the Foreign Secretary's figures as he has now warned that the situation changes everyday.

One thing we haven't got from Straw is a justification based on evidence for his changes of opinion on the likelihood of war. In reality, such evidence is unnecessary as the UK government will follow the lead of the US in any case.

Prime Minister Tony Blair confirmed as much today when he said: "It is massively in our national interest to remain the closest ally of the US."
