White Trash Curry Kick Booted Into Touch
- Under-fire artist cancels work due to safety fears

PERFORMANCE artist Andre Stitt has been forced to abandon plans to kick a carton of curry down Bedford High Street.

Stitt was to have pulled off his thought-provoking stunt - titled White Trash Curry Kick - on March 29, but such has been the furious reaction to his work that it was feared huge crowds would lead to safety problems.

"We were not anticipating the huge interest by the media and the publicity it would create," said Sarah Bloomfield, director of Bedford Creative Arts. "The event would involve an awful lot of people and it really would not be safe."

Over and above what many critics saw as the dubious artistic merits of White Trash Curry Kick, tabloid-led reaction centred around the UKP12,000 of public money Stitt was paid for a series of works, of which Curry Kick formed a part.

Other elements of the series are to go ahead, not least a event which involves taking stuffed animals from Bedford Museum to a nearby forest.
