|Britain Confirms Nuclear Strategy on Iraq
- 'We reserve the right,' says Defence Secretary
BRITISH Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon has made it clear the government would back the use of nuclear weapons against Iraq.
"We have always made it clear we would reserve the right to use nuclear weapons in the right conditions," Hoon said yesterday.
Those conditions Hoon specified as being if Iraq uses "chemical or biological weapons". Hoon made his hardline statement in response to fellow minister Clare Short who had previously said she could not envisage any scenario in which Britain would countenance a nuclear strike.
The split within the British government over nuclear weapon policy is symptomatic of splits running right through the ruling Labour Party where Prime Minister Tony Blair finds himself in a clear minority as a supporter of war.
