Imperial College Takes on SARS
- London experts say they now 'have a good idea' what causes killer disease

LONDON'S Imperial College is helping to lead the battle against SARS by using sophisticated mathematical models to track the new disease and predict the frequency and location of its occurrence.

SARS has killed at least 78 people, nearly all in the Far East, and has been contracted by upwards of 2,000 people all over the world. So far experts have not discovered the exact causal agent behind the disease, but are believed to be closing in on an answer.

"We don't know what infectious agent causes the serious lung disease which SARS involves that is proving fatal in some cases," said Imperial College's Professor Roy Anderson. "We have a good idea of what it might be but we are not sure yet."
