Britain Fizzes to Top of Alcopops Charts
- Rest of Europe yet to find the taste

BRITISH drinkers are way out in front in the European Alcopop league, according to a new survey of the continent's drinking habits.

Some 60 per cent of all alcopop drinks - brands like Hooch, Bacardi Breezer and Smirnoff Ice - sold in Europe is bought by UK drinkers who guzzle an average of 5.16 litres each a year. Irish drinkers are in runners-up spot at 4.97 litres per person per year, with Germany lagging in third place on 3.19.

Within the UK, it is women who make up the majority of alcopop drinkers. One theory for this is that many women believe alcopops are less fattening than other alcoholic drinks. "They are wrong," said Dr Jonathan Chick, an expert in alcohol-related problems. "These drinks are full of sugar and alcohol is fattening in itself."
