Fire In The West End
- Flames threaten Theatre Royal Haymarket

A FIRE started at 03.30 this morning in the building adjacent to the Theatre Royal Haymarket. 50 fire-fighters were called out to battle the blaze that threatened to destroy the 180 year-old theatre.

Haymarket and the surrounding side streets have been cordoned off to traffic and pedestrians. Smoke billowing from the building to the left of the theatre spread as far as Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross Road and the five storey building will have to be gutted. The historic Theatre Royal, however, remains undamaged.

Previews for The Breath of Life will therefore start as normal October 4. Fans of Dames Maggie Smith and Judi Dench can look forward to seeing their stars in the flesh without fear of coughing. "We're a bit smokey but otherwise fine," said a theatre spokesman.
