Earth Moves for London
- Quake reaches capital; some people wake up

LONDONERS mostly stayed resolutely in the land of nod in the early hours of this morning as Britain was hit by an earthquake.

Tremors reaching 4.8 on the Richter Scale gave the UK its biggest shock in modern times. In the world league table of earthquakes that wouldn't rate highly, but it was enough to wake a few light-sleepers from their slumbers.

The quake was centred near Birmingham in the west Midlands at seven minutes to one this morning and its minor effects were felt all over England and Wales. Tremors and minor earthquakes are relatively common in the midlands as Birmingham lies on a section of rock which has fault lines running along its side.
