Nuking Iraq May be the Only Option, Says Tory Leader
- Duncan Smith backs the bomb in future attack

TORY leader Iain Duncan Smith has raised the stakes on the Iraq question by coming up with a nuclear attack as its answer.

"If we aren't prepared to eradicate these programmes that he possesses now then you will be left with only that [nuclear] option in a few years time," Duncan Smith said on national radio.

With Tony Blair adopting a hawkish attitude to Iraq, it is perhaps understandable the leader of the Tories, traditionally Britain's most pro-military party, should want to upstage the Prime Minister.

Duncan Smith did say that dropping nuclear weapons on Iraq "is out of proportion with the threat that at the moment he [Saddam Hussein] poses," but he was clearly trying to align himself with the most gung-ho of American political leaders.

In the summer, the US refused to rule out a battlefield nuclear strike, insisting it needed to keep all military options open.
