Police Numbers Soar as Crime Falls
- Most cops for eighty years

HOT on the heels of recent crime figures which showed the number of street robberies falling, comes news that there are now more police officers in Britain than at any time since 1921.

In the last year alone more than 10,000 new recruits have joined the ranks of the boys and girls in blue, taking the total figure up to 129,603, just a few hundred short of the government's target of 130,000 by next spring.

The latest numbers will come as a boost to Home Secretary David Blunkett, the minister ultimately in charge of the police who is keen for the government to shake off its image as failing to tackle crime. Blunkett is now keen to cut through some of the paperwork that causes officers to spend most of their time at their desks.

"The record numbers will only be effective in tackling crime if we break down the unnecessary obstacles they face," a Home Office spokesperson said.
