|Umoja Makes a Final Move
- The spirit of togetherness leaves London
UMOJA has finally posted closing notices, coming to a halt ten months earlier than anticipated on February 8 2003, rather than December of the same year.
Following a transfer from the Shaftesbury Theatre to the Queen's Theatre and a year-long run, the two booking extensions at the show's current West End home in the New London Theatre have now been cancelled.
Umoja - the word means spirit of togetherness - came to London from South Africa in a flurry of tribal music, gumboot dancing, jazz and gospel. The show's company of singers, dancers, drummers and marimba players transcended many difficulties to dramatise South Africa's musical heritage. Many of the cast came from severely disadvantaged township backgrounds.
Umoja bounced back by switching to the Queen's when Camden Council forced the show to leave Shaftesbury Theatre last February following noise complaints from nearby residents. Judging by the show's track record in packing up and moving on, the producers' dream to tour the show worldwide next year looks likely to happen
