Potter Puts Spell on the Economy
- Movie tie-in products set to help Britain break Christmas shopping record

HARRY POTTER is not only good at fighting off the forces of magical darkness, but is also set to at least postpone what many economists see as a looming recession.

Sales of Potter videos, console games and other toys are one of this Christmas season's sure fire hits and will help drive what retail research company Verdict expect will be a record UKP31.3 billion December shopping bill.

That represents a 4% per cent rise on last year, itself a record-busting one. Lord of the Rings merchandise will run Potter gifts close in the run-up to the festive period, retailers expect, with both film-tie products given a boost by the take-of of DVD players.
