| Ken Plans Trams for Central London
- Two new lines to be built over next decade CENTRAL London is to get two new tram lines in a UKP500 million scheme announced by London Mayor Ken Livingstone today. The first, set to launch by 2009, will serve west London, running from Uxbridge in to Shepherd's Bush via Southall and Ealing. The second, due to be up and running by 2011, is the more ambitious, running from Camden in north London to Brixton and Peckham in the south, via King's Cross and Waterloo. The success of the Tramlink scheme in Croydon, south London, has given Livingstone and his advisers confidence that there will be high take up of the the two routes and that they will help relive traffic congestion. What happens in the intervening nine years is, unfortunately, another matter. |
