Van Goes Up for Art Prize
- Grime-graffiti artist creates out of dirt

WRITING 'Wash Me' by scraping the words out of the dust on trucks is a hilarious rite of passage for most youngsters and most leave their grime-graffiti antics at that.

Not so Ben Long, an artist who creates wonderful drawings from the dirt found on the back of trucks, vans and lorries. Such is Long's skill that he has now been nominated for the prestigious UKP10,000 Pizza Express Prospects drawing prize, held in London today.

"Some people are very intimidated by the idea of going to art galleries, so I thought it might be interesting to turn things round," Long said.

Long is keen to stay true to his vision of avoiding the institutionalising effect of the gallery circuit. "They originally intended to put a van in the gallery. I thought it was a contradiction of my original idea," he said. Instead, Long has submitted a video of himself creating one of his pieces to the judging panel.
