South Bank Turns to Sydney
- Arts complex gets new chief drafted in from Oz

AFTER years of speculation over status of the South Bank arts complex, its future is set to be firmed up following the appointment of Michael Lynch as the head of redevelopment plans.

Lynch moves to London from Sydney where he has been in charge of the Sydney Opera House for the past four years.

"I am thrilled to have been appointed," Lynch said. "This is potentially the world's greatest arts centre, attracting the very best artists and performers. The Royal Festival Hall [part of the South Bank complex] was the inspiration for the Sydney Opera House."

Lynch's plans are likely to include measures to make the South Bank a brighter and more welcoming place as many punters find it bleak and intimidating.
