Cash Boost for Indie Cinema
- Film Council to fund new arthouse screens

INDEPENDENT cinema in the UK is set to be handed UKP17 million to help fund new arthouse cinemas and screens and refurbishments of existing ones, thanks to the government backed Film Council.

London is not likely to see much of the cash directly as it is one of the few areas already fairly well served by alternative cinema, but the knock on effects of a bigger audience for such movies are likely to mean more marginal films shown in the capital.

Some of the money is to be spent on marketing for alternative movies, a part of the business industry insiders say art films consistently fall down on, due to the huge ad budgets of the big film corporations.
