Queen Buys Into Culture
- UKP10,000 prizes put up by Her Majesty for young artists

THE QUEEN and Britain's cultural elite come together tonight for a prize ceremony to celebrate Her Majesty's Golden Jubilee.

UKP10,000 prizes will be handed out to winners in various categories, from visual arts to drama, music and dance and are to be funded out of The Queen's own coffers.

"It is an inspiration," said the awards' organiser, Belinda Harley. "It throws light on the fact that the arts are one of the national assets that we must look after and preserve."

Big names set to hand out the prizes, which are only to go to young artists, at the Royal Academy of Arts include Sam Mendes, David Hockney and Sir Michael Gambon, and the list of audience members reads like a roll call of the great and good of British artistic endeavour.

Among those present are said to be: Martin Amis, Dame Eileen Atkins, Dame Beryl Bainbridge, Dame Shirley Bassey, Nicole Farhi, Jools Holland, Mick Jagger, Dame Cleo Laine, Dame Vera Lynn, Brian May, Stella McCartney, Sir Simon Rattle, Griff Rhys Jones, Keith Richards, JK Rowling, Ronnie Wood and Victoria Wood.
