All Change At The Almeida
- Small theatre shows its worth

NEIL LA BUTE has bowed out of directing his play at the Almeida. The multi-talented artist is busy turning his last Almeida hit, The Shape Of Things, into a film. In the mean time David Leveaux will direct La Bute's The Distance From Here, due to open May 8.

Fresh from his success directing the West End transfer of The Real Thing, Leveaux looks just the man for the job. His production was well received in the States, boding well for his staging of La Bute's look at dysfunctional Americans. Ever contemporary and never ones to panic, Almeida directors Nicholas Kent and Ian McDiarmid are following the Donmar and the Royal Court in extending a welcome to American playwrights.

The Distance From Here marks the Almeida's final show before returning to its refurbished Islington home with former Royal Shakespeare Company director Michael Attenborough at the helm. At a time when large companies like the RSC are flailing to secure new homes for their work, the Almeida is going from strength to strength.
