Fraud Hits London Theatres
- Industry wakes up to UKP400 million worth of scams

THE SOCIETY of Ticket Agents and Retailers see ticket and credit card fraud as one of the chief threats to the theatre industry.

While discussing the general economic health of the industry, chief executives of the British Tourist Authority, the Society of London Theatre and the Theatrical Management Association were amazed to find that credit card fraud costs in the West End theatres are estimated at around UKP400 million a year.

In the wake of September 11 and threatened strikes from impoverished theatre workers, effective ticketing is seen as crucial to the survival of theatre. With on-line ticket sales more secure than any box office, some experts believe the internet could prove the saviour of theatreland.
