London - the Developed World's Fastest Growing City
- Infrastructure investment needed now, says Mayor

LONDON is the fastest growing city in the developed world, according to research commissioned by London Mayor Ken Livingstone.

London's population reached a modern nadir of 6.8 million in the early 1980s, saw a steady increase thereafter and has now embarked on a period of fast growth. Since 1989, London has added 600,000 to its population, with nearly 200,000 of those coming in the past two years.

Extrapolations based on these figures predict that by 2016, London will have grown by a further 750,000 souls to reach a population of 8.15 million. Newcomers to London are made up of a combination of immigrants from the rest of the UK, mainland Europe and poorer parts of the world.

Livingstone says the figures show that massive infrastructure investment is required in the capital. If the 2016 figure is correct, something like 23,000 more homes, 130 more schools and several major new transport links will be needed.
