London the Dirty Old Town
- Only Athens is worse in EU, says survey

LONDON wins lots of international awards for its finance, culture and history but has for years struggled to make headway on one front - its cleanliness.

Now the UK capital has plunged to new depths of dirt, according to research consultancy William M Mercer, who rank London second worst city for grime in the European Union.

Apparently only Athens is a match for our levels of pollution, rubbish cluttered streets and general squalor. A lot of the problem is to do with traffic congestion, experts say, with both London and Athens suffering in this respect.

In fairness to central London councils such as Westminster and Camden, much has been done in recent years to improve the state of the city's streets, and maybe London Mayor Ken Livingstone's congestion charges, which come in to effect next year, can do the same for air pollution.
