Monet and Picasso Go for Millions
- Art auctions break records

ONE of Claude Monet's waterlilies paintings was sold for UKP13.5 million at Sotheby's yesterday, making the impressionist work the most expensive painting sold in London this year.

Monet's painting date back to 1908 and has been in a private collection for the last 60 years. Yesterday's anonymous buyer is also likely to be a private collector, so the painting not seen in public until yesterday since 1925 could go under wraps again.

Today, Christie's auction house is hoping for similar success with the sale of Pablo Picasso's Nu au collier, a painting of his lover Marie-Therese Walters. Experts expect the work to fetch around UKP10 million.
