Stars Rise and Shine for Bombay Dreams
- Bollywood set to wake up the West End

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER'S Bombay Dreams opened last night to standing ovations from a starry audience. A host of high profile artists account for the initial success of a project that has been four years in development. Based on a book by Meera Syal, with music by AR Rahman and song lyrics by Don 'Diamonds Are Forever' Black and dance from the Indian choreographer Farah Khan, the Bollywoodtastic musical has sparked an Indian Summer in London.

The biggest star on stage is Preeya 'Bend It Like Beckham' Kalidas. She plays the idealistic Bollywood producer whose love affair with rough diamond Raza Jaffrey forces her to confront the Indian slums. Mean time Bollywood stars in attendance at the premiere included actors Juhi Chawla and Naseeruddin and film producer Subhash Gai.

The Apollo Victoria has not been so full since Starlight Express opened there in 1984. Despite low advance bookings, Lloyd Webber can take comfort from last night's success. "In Rahman, I have met someone who can carry the torch of musical theatre into a new dimension," said Lloyd Webber.
