- Jubilee celebrations bathed in light and royalist sentiment
ONE MILLION people filled the streets of central London on Monday and Tuesday to help the Queen celebrate 50 years on the throne.
Aside from those human revellers, good weather was the most welcome guest at the party as the predicted rain storm held off until a few minutes after the Queen had made her final appearance on the balcony of Buckingham palace to receive the well-wishes of the crowd.
Stirring renditions of Land of Hope and Glory and God Save the Queen rounded off a day that had included carnival style floats and military bands as well as the royal procession itself, the highlight of which was the Queen's golden carriage.
Though this past long-weekend was the pivotal point of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, more commemorations will follow throughout the summer and even on into next year, when it will be 50 years since the Queen was actually crowned. Elizabeth II ascended the throne on the death of her father in 1952, but the coronation was held a year later.
