- SMTV hunts viewers for talent
CHILDREN'S TELEVISION SHOW SMTV launches a month long Pop-Idol style contest starting tomorrow. The winner of the talent hunt will appear in the West End musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.
Come September the new musical 125 Street will also be spicing up its tale of wannabee stars by featuring a different unknown each night. But the challenge for SMTV viewers remains unique, as children will be judged on their impersonation of television presenters Claire Richards, Brian Dowling, Ian Watkins or Tess Daly. Four finalists will then be given acting classes before the winner is selected August 24.
The announcement of the lucky protege coincides with this year's Kids' Week. Both events are organised by the Society of London theatres and sponsored by Marks and Spencer. The SMTV talent hunt is therefore the first commercial collaboration between TV and theatre producers.
