George Michael Won't Go Back to US
- Worried singer leaves LA mansion and boyfriend for safer UK

GEORGE MICHAEL is staying put in London, saying he would fear for his safety should he return to the US.

"Americans are very reactionary right now and I cannot return to America, even though my partner lives there," Michael said in the aftermath of the release of his single Shoot the Dog, which pokes fun at US President George Bush and UK Premier Tony Blair.

"It's been very heavily inferred that I was actually an al-Qaeda sympathiser," the former Wham! singer said, "but I'm not anti-American in any sense."

Shoot the Dog has not been released in the US, but the publicity it garnered on its release in Britain ensured that American media outlets would not ignore what many of them consider a slur on their country. Michael is particularly perturbed that his sexuality and past conviction for lewd behaviour has been brought up with such frequency in the media attacks. The New York Post dubbed the singer a "past-his-prime pop pervert".

"For some reason I don't have a right to talk about anything because I got caught four years ago with a police officer in a Los Angeles toilet.," Michael said.
