Duncan Smith Guns for Brixton Experiment
- Tory leader to slam new approach to cannabis

TORY leader Iain Duncan Smith will roll up to Brixton today to spark up the debate on cannabis decriminalisation.

Duncan Smith is expected to speak against the pilot project in south London which both local police and the government say has allowed more resources to be used against hard-drug trafficking.

Some observers and some local residents have complained that the relaxed attitudes to cannabis shown by police has encouraged an increase in overall drug dealing and it this aspect that Duncan Smith is to pick up on.

Supporters of the scheme counter that any increase in dealing in Brixton is precisely because it is the one area covered by the scheme; extend the pilot to the rest of London and Brixton's problems would be relieved, goes their argument.

That argument looks like swaying Home Secretary David Blunkett, who is reckoned to be ready to reclassify cannabis from a Class B drug to Class C, a move which amounts to virtual decriminalisation.
