Thatcher is Beheaded
- Marble statue decapitated in attack

THE MAN responsible for lopping the head off a UKP50,000 marble statue off former Prime Minister Magaret Thatcher will be in court today on a charge of criminal damage.

Paul Kelleher, 37, of Isleworth in south west London, is alleged to have used a metal pole to strike at the statue's neck, causing instant decapitation.

"Although the statue of Baroness Thatcher ranks among our most controversial commissions, acts of vandalism against works of art can never be tolerated in a civilised society," said London MP Tony Banks, who sits on the advisory committee on works of art in the House of Commons, where the statue is expected to go on show soon.

The real Mrs T. unveiled the statue, which is currently on display at the Guildhall gallery, only two months ago. Experts say the statue can be restored as the break was a clean one.
