Cats Put to Sleep
- Twenty-one years and out for legendary musical

CATS, the West End's longest-running musical, is to close in four months time.

"We had started to see the signs over the last couple of years that the show was slowly coming to the end of its life," said Cats producer Cameron Mackintosh of the New London Theatre stalwart. "We didn't want it to keep on running until it became a poor, old, unloved moggy."

Cats joins fellow Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Starlight Express on the unwanted list, the curtain falling on the latter last weekend. Cats has been one of the jewels in Theatreland's crown for 21 years, notching up almost 9,000 performances. It has taken UKP140 million in ticket sales in London and almost ten times that figure on a worldwide basis.
