Opera Throws Off Snobby Image
- Research 'proves' Royal Opera House case

THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE in Covent Garden has produced figures to disprove the widely held belief that it is an elitist institution.

A survey by research group Experian reveals that 20 per cent of the Covent Garden audience earns less than UKP15,000 a year, a similar proportion to the number of under 25s, another group popularly thought to be under-represented.

"We have always known our audience was like this, but we needed research to prove it to other people," said a ROH spokesperson.

After being refurbished over the past few years, the ROH believes it can go on and attract an even more varied audience to help justify its state subsidies.

"We are committed to making the Royal Opera House more accessible - cheaper seats, school matinées, TV relays, giant screens in the Piazza," said ROH chief Tony Hall.
