Poem Tells of Margaret's 'Suffering in Love and Loss'
- Motion pens honest and moving lines for a very human princess

POET LAUREATE Andrew Motion has penned a remarkably frank verse in memory of Princess Margaret, whose funeral took place on Thursday.

"I wanted to draw attention to what is recognisably human about the things that happen to the Royal Family," Motion explained of his poem which contains the moving line, "no privilege on earth can keep a life from suffering in love and loss."

Motion makes no bones about all that "privilege" with its "money, houses and holidays", an aspect of his poem that makes for a change from the often obsequious efforts of previous laureates.

The post of Poet Laureate is one granted by the Royal Family, often to the leading English poet of the age, and carries with it the salary of UKP5,000 a year plus 150 bottles of sherry.
