|Potter in Cookson Quest
- Library lenders still prefer saga queen
HARRY POTTER might have seen off He Who Cannot Be Named a number of times, but the boy-wizard has yet to master a more daunting foe, veteran saga fiction author and queen of the nation's libraries, Catherine Cookson.
Potter author JK Rowling's third adventure in the series, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, has made a valiant attempt to dislodge Cookson from the top of the library lending charts, but it could only manage third spot behind The Thursday Friend and The Blind Years, both Cookson titles, for 2001.
Cookson's books have been at the top of library charts since 1987 but Rowling's race up the charts - the best placed Harry Potter was 77th in 2000 - suggests a fierce battle to come.
