Osbourne Versus the Queen on Christmas Day
- Rollercoaster rides aplenty as nation gets seasonal message

THE QUEEN faces stiff competition from Sharon Osbourne, wife of rock nutter Ozzy, at 3.00pm on Christmas Day.

Traditonally that's the time British people sit down after a big turkey dinner to watch Her Majesty's annual broadcast to the nation. This time the Queen talks of her "rollercoaster" year in which both her sister and mother died but which also saw an upsurge in popular royalist sentiment thanks to the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

Mrs Osbourne uses the same metaphor to describe her own recent past. "This year for us has been like a rollercoaster ride," she says, referring to her colon cancer and the way her family have become cult stars as the subject of a fly-on-the-wall show for MTV.

The Osbourne message goes out on Channel 4, a station that has previously used Jesse Jackson, Quentin Crisp and Ali G for its 3.00pm Chritmas Day slot. Twenty years ago, the Queen's Christmas broadcast featured at the top of the year's ratings, pulling in close to 30 million viewers. Gradually that has slipped to under 9 million.
