- Broadway hit brings McKellen to town
IAN McKELLEN appears in Dance of Death at the Lyric theatre March 2003. McKellen reprises the role he performed last year on Broadway.
August Strindberg's classic comes to town with director Sean Mathias also in tow. In the Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf tradition, the play concerns a married couple caught in a series of painful mind games. Strindberg drew on his own unhappy experience of marriage to set his characters on an island nicknamed, 'Little Hell.'
McKellen's performances in Ibsen's Enemy of the People five years ago at the National theatre prepares him for the lead role of Edgar the unhappy husband. Most recently he was seen in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and he was last heard criticising West End audiences for their infatuation with Hollywood stars. By contrast the Dance of Death promises a fine production of a well made play.
