UFO Case Kept Secret for 20 Years
- Government opens up file on the Rendlesham sighting

UFO sightings were kept secret by the government for more than 20 years, newly released documents have revealed.

The documents concern a sighting in 1980 by US airforce personnel at Rendlesham, Suffolk, near the RAF Woodbridge base. Several airmen reported seeing "glowing" triangular shapes sending out a pulsating light that caused local farm animals to go into a "frenzy".

Until now details of the sighting have been suppressed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD), although the more open freedom of information regime in the US meant that the Rendlesham incident has been known about in UFOlogist circles before.

Today's revelation comes thanks to the work of the Parliamentary Ombudsman Ann Abraham, who is looking into secrecy across all government departments. Speaking about the Rendlesham case, ex-defence minister Peter Kilfoyle said: "The MoD is one of the more incorrigible cases of government by secrecy."
