V&A Wins Space Race
- New gallery marks period of expansion for design museum

THE VICTORIA AND ALBERT's new Contemporary Space gallery is expected to help continue the museum's recent big increase in visitor numbers.

The first exhibition for Contemporary Space takes in work from the Milan Furniture Fair and runs until June 9, kicking off a series of exhibitions which curators hope will promote a more modern image for the Kensington museum.

In time, Contemporary Space will move into the new Spiral building - a tilted box on stilts - a development which should secure the future of the V&A as a must-see marker on the tourist track.

Numbers visiting the museum have risen dramatically over the last year in response to the government's free admission policy.
