- Royle family star jokes about English footballers at film premiere
ROYLE FAMILY star Ricky Tomlinson was given a welcome befitting a football hero as he arrived for the premiere of his soccer flick, Mike Bassett: England Manager last night.
The comic, who stars as the manager of Norwich city suddenly promoted to England coach, joked how the role had made him think about leaving acting for a job in football. He then took a light-hearted swipe at the certain members of the England team's hair-raising barnets.
"If I take over, the first thing I will do will be to appoint a new team hairdresser," he said at the premiere, which took place at the Odeon Leicester Square. "Some of the England lads' haircuts are a disgrace. Seaman's ponytail will have to go and Beckham will have to make his mind up whether he wants a crop or a mohican or what."
Tomlinson arrived waving a red white and blue England scarf but was outdone by Fat Les singer Keith Allen who came dressed in drag. Allen then revealed that the dress was a copy of a Liz Hurley frock. "It obviously works because everyone is pointing the camera at me," he quipped.
As well as the usual hotchpotch of celebrities turning up - ex-Catatonia singer Cerys Matthews, Sir Bob Geldof, Mick Hucknall, and TV presenter Carole Vorderman among some - there were a few football stars present. Aston Villa keeper David James, West Ham midfielder and Sunderland manager Peter Reid all attended the screening.
