|Anarchists Target Arms Trade Show
- Killing machine 'retail therapy' condemned by anti-capitalists
ANTI-CAPITALIST protesters in London will tomorrow go up against Patriot missiles and armoured cars in what would appear to be battle doomed to disastrous and bloody defeat.
Luckily for groups such as Reclaim the Streets and the anarchist Wombles (White Overall Movement Building Libertarian Effective Struggle), the lethal weapons will not be deployed against them, but are part of the biennial Defence Systems and Equipment International (DSEi) show, held at the ExCel centre in Docklands.
The anti-capitalist groups aim to join forces with the long-running Campaign Against the Arms Trade (CAAT) and stage a large protest to highlight what they see as the pernicious global effects of the arms trade. "Many of this year's invitees are from countries engaged in open hostilities," said Richard Bingley of CAAT. "It is hideously absurd that countries which spend most their time at each others' throats can put aside differences for a week of retail therapy."
"Governments want to defend themselves," countered Alan Sharman of the Defence Manufacturers Association. "That gives rise to an arms industry and, like other industries, it wants to display its wares. There is nothing wrong with that."
