|Blair: Palestine Question holds the Answer to Stopping Future Terror
- 'New Dynamic' needed for peace process, agrees Schroeder
TONY BLAIR has raised hopes that the US/British military strikes on Afghanistan could bring a solution to the Palestinian question.
The Prime Minister has met with many leaders of the Arab world over the past week and is now ready to push for a re-start to the Israel/Palestine peace process "so there are not generations of people who use the Palestinian cause as an excuse for terrorism."
German Chancellor Gerhard Shroeder also spoke in favour of bringing a "new dynamic" to the peace process and US President George Bush has made similar sounds in recent days.
The Western leaders are keen to keep intact their alliance with moderate Arab states, who have shown some signs of backing away from full support of the military action against Afghanistan.
It is as yet unclear what new plans will be on the table to revive the Israel/Palestine peace process, although it seems likely moves to persuade Israel to withdraw from the Occupied Territories will form a central plank of any formula.
Support among Londonders for the air attacks on Afghanistan is high, according to an ICM poll. 54 per cent of those surveyed backed the plan to capture Osama bin Laden and topple the Taliban regime; 24 per cent thought action should stop once bin Laden had been dealt with, and 19 per cent said all strikes should cease immediately.
