South African Musical Livens Up The Shaftesbury
- Umoja replaces Peggy Sue

THE SHAFTESBURY Theatre welcomes a new South African musical from November 12. The upbeat Umoja translates as The Spirit of Togetherness, a fitting title for a musical which West End producers have been quick to snap up in an effort to stand strong against the pressures of war and recession.

The musical replaces the ill-reviewed Peggy Sue Got Married, which recently closed prematurely. To the tune of music from Kwaito and Pantsula, award-winning director Ian von Memerty sets a 36 strong cast of singers, dancers, drummers and marimba players to the task of dramatising South Africa's musical heritage.

This show sounds like a winner, judging by the popularity of the current hit Lady Salsa. The all singing all dancing Cuban performers have continued to rock the West End stage with renditions of their country's history at a time when anticipated long runners like Notre Dame de Paris are closing due to the current decline in tourism. Let's hope Umoja learns the steps of Lady Salsa's success.
