It Really Doesn't Matter Any More, as Buddy Bows Out
- Long-running musical latest in growing list of West End closures

BUDDY has posted closing dates for December 15, leaving the Strand theatre dark over Christmas. Blue/Orange finishes its run earlier than expected in March 2002, and the replacement show at the Duchess theatre has not yet been confirmed.

These West End shows have little in common besides their unexpected closure. The musical tribute to Buddy Holly surprised producers and punters alike by transferring from the Victoria Palace back in 1989 and picking up Olivier Awards for best musical along the way. On the other hand the issue-bashing Blue/Orange started life in the National Theatre and was expected to run until at least January.

While recent closures such as The Hunch Back of Notre Dame and Feelgood suffered from poor ticket sales even before September 11, Buddy and Blue/Orange were once hot tickets. What show closes next is anybody's guess.
